And although the main forms of gingerbread were considered to be girls (ladyboys) and horsemen, cakes in the form of boots, flowers, horseflies and stars were also popular. It was the star that was considered one of the main symbols of Christmas and an obligatory attribute of the festive nativity scene of carolers.
